Here’s what you need to know. Every person has different eyelashes, and mascaras are also made differently to fit every person. Mascaras can come in the basic liquid, cake or cream form. But nowadays, they come in many varieties. Despite that, they all contain the same basic pigments, oils, waxes and preservative components.

In choosing the best mascara, you should need to know the following:

1. The basic effects of the mascara, whether it is Water-proof or Non-water-proof.

 

Water-proof Mascara reduce smudging because they contain substances that rebuff water, which is why it is advisable to use if you have oily skin or if you live in humid areas. It is also best to use when you are planning to attend a wedding, go to the beach or watch a sad movie, as this prevents you from having raccoon-looking eyes in the end. If you want a mascara that can hold your curls more, then a water-proof mascara is the best one for you.

Non Water-proof Mascaras can tend to smudge because they contain ingredients that are water-soluble and thus, don’t hold your curls very well.

2. The kind of eyelashes you have, whether it is thin and weak or thick. If you have thin/weak  lashes, consider using a mascara that has a thick formula as they are dense and won’t make your lashes look droopy. If you have thick lashes then use a mascara that has a wet formula as it can build up your lashes and make it look longer. The nice thing about wet formulas is that they don’t dry too fast, so you have enough time to build up more and more length to your eyelashes.

3. The different effects of a mascara:

Lengthening Mascara - contain plastic polymers that cling to the ends of your lashes and extend the tips, making it look longer. The wand of lengthening mascaras are short and have densely packed bristles helping in creating that lengthening effect. The only problem about this type is that the fibers causing the lashes to look longer can irritate the eye. This is suitable for people with thick lashes.

Thickening Mascara - adds volume to the lashes and have a thicker formula than any other mascara. Their pigments are also more intense to really give that volumized look. This is good for filmy and thin lashes whether they’d be long or short.

Curling Mascara – mascaras with curling formulas contain polymers that causes the lashes to shrink and lift once it has been applied. This kind of mascara is suitable for straight lashes that need a little curl and work well especially with those that are short. But take note that curling mascaras do not replace your eyelash curlers.

Non-Clumping Mascara - have moisture-rich ingredients like silk extract and glycerin which causes the product to glide on smoothly and keep lashes from looking clumpy. The wand applicators have long bristles to pull the product evenly through your lashes. Though they are non-clumping, you won’t really get a lot of volume and length from it as they contain fewer waxes and fibers than other regular mascaras.

Nourishing Mascara – is applied prior to putting on your normal mascara. They nourish your lashes and also thicken and lengthen them. Though it is good for all types of lashes, nourishing mascaras can make them look droopy. So, if you don’t want that kind of effect, then use this at night to nourish them if your lashes are thin and weak. Otherwise, make sure they are longer and thicker before using this to prevent them from looking droopy when you’re out.
